The aspiration to build a new Indonesia under the lead of Soekarno caused the delegation of some citizens to Europe as students, artists, and journalists to absorb new knowledge and gather experiences. During those achievements, the "September 30" movement (G 30 S) caused big influences to those who were abroad. 

The represion from the Orde Baru regime those who considered leftist and communistic was done through screenings and withdrawals of passports. A few of these citizens choose not to come back to Indonesia, because the scale of the consequences, such as arrests and forceful abductions. 

To survive through these tragedies, they opened a restaurant as a ymbol of solidarity among exiles. Restaurant Indonesia in Paris, became part of emancipation movement by Indonesians who cared about human-rights isues among other immigrants. Restaurant Indonesia was boycotted by Soeharto's regime, the inconsiderate label of the 'red' restaurant never dettered their spirit to be a monument of human rights struggles.
